"Is It A Sin?" Is The Wrong Question

How many times have you heard someone ask "Is it a sin to drink" or "Is it a sin to ___________ (you fill in the blank)"? Often, when people ask that question, they already know the answer but want someone to tell them that it is ok if they do that. Today, I want to show you why "Is it a sin?" is not the right question.

Romans 14:13Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. The first part of Romans chapter 14 dealt with judging others because of their personal convictions but in verse 13 and following, Paul changed gears and said "Do not let your personal freedom cause your brother to sin". Instead of asking "Is it a sin to ___________?", we should be asking "Is this a wise thing to do?".

In verse 15, Paul said "if your brother is grieved by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love". And then in verse 21, Paul said "It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble." and I want to emphasize those two words "do anything". If you let your personal convictions cause someone to misunderstand your beliefs or believe that you are sinning against God, then you are hurting your witness. And once your witness is damaged, it is hard to gain their trust again.

1 Corinthians 10:23 (ESV) — 23 “All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up. This is Paul's way of saying "Ask the right question and you will see if it is wise or not." So below is a helpful chart to help you make the right choices.
